Pieper, specializes in historic and recycled building materials, plus offers a full line of professional services, including assistance with architectural salvage, woodwork restoration, and preservation consultation. Pieper is a professional civil engineer and holds an advanced degree in historic preservation planning from Cornell University. His goal with Building Preservation Works is to become Central New York's resource for the restoration and maintenance of historic and older buildings. During his 25-year career, he has gained extensive experience in building construction and restoration, and served as the Director of Preservation Services with a local preservation organization. "Our region has a rich history, and its abundant older buildings reflect broad architectural trends," notes Pieper. From restoring a classic Greek revival home, to repairing the intricate details of a slightly younger, Queen Anne style Victorian, or replacing a bracket or other decorative trim, Building Preservation Works is a local alternative. The company also maintains an inventory that can assist in maintaining an aging barn, or caring for an important public building in local communities. For those who prefer new construction, but would like to incorporate a few historic architectural elements in order to lend the character of an earlier era, Building Preservation Works can provide technical assistance and well as help identify sources of materials. Inventory includes materials rescued from many Syracuse buildings that were slated for demolition. The majority of the stock is millwork, and most goods are likely the products of native forests. The collection of doors exceeds 400 items, suitable for interior, exterior, cabinetry, barn, and garage applications. There are also windows of various configurations, and shutters to flank them, along with assorted moldings, bead board, barn board, and floorboards. Staircase components include handrails, spindles, and newel posts. Porch elements, such as columns and architectural brackets are also available. A vast array of hardware complements the selection latches, hinges, doorknobs, decorative plates. BPW also carries an extensive line of plumbing fixtures claw foot bathtubs, pedestal sinks, commodes, and even antique sinks. Other items such as iron floor grates, tin ceiling panels, radiator covers, and lighting fixtures, are all part of the growing inventory. "This is a perfect business for Homer, a community that is on both the national and state historic register," said BDC Director Linda Hartsock.
