The Town of Cuyler




Introduction

Cuyler is located in most northeast part of Cortland County on NYS Route 13, north of Truxton, at the foot of Onondaga County. Parts of Cuyler are the highest points in Cortland County.

History of the Town

Cuyler was settled in 1792, as a military tract, and at first was part of the Town of Truxton. Cuyler also was once part of Fabius and Solon. It was settled by a war soldier named David Moss from New Jersey who came up the Tioughnioga River by raft with his brother-in-law, James Lockwood.

 

Population Characteristics

Cuyler is a farm and residential community. Some Cuyler residents are employed in Syracuse in neighboring Onondaga County.

 

Physical Characteristics

Cuyler is the home of the Onondaga Branch of the Finger Lakes Trail. Spicer Falls has been the home of several mills throughout the years, including a saw mill. Trout Brook boasts native trout. The Tioughnioga River crosses Cuyler.

Natural Resources: The Onondaga Branch of the Finger Lakes Trail draws hikers in the summer. Winter sports, like cross county skiing and snow mobile riding are made possible by the nature of the land.

Transportation/Highways: Cuyler is on NYS Route 13 north of Truxton.

Community Facilities and Services:

Electricity: Nation Grid serves the energy needs of Cuyler.

Water and Sewage: Cuyler does not have municipal water. There is a municipal sewage system in the hamlet of Cuyler.

Education: Cuyler residents use four different school districts; DeRuyter, Fabias/Pompey, Homer and Truxton.

Fire and Emergency: Cuyler has a fire company.

Health Care: The Family Health Network has a rural health clinic.

Recreational and Tourist attractions: Winter sports, and fishing and hunting. Cuyler is less than 5 miles from Truxton which also has many recreational attractions.
