Cortland County is situated within the close radius of three world class university technology centers that represent a leading edge collaboration between universities, private industry and state government. Through these three New York State Centers for Advanced Technology (CAT's), researchers at prestigious universities work side-by-side with large and small companies to develop and commercialize new technologies.

New York State Centers for Advanced Technology in the Cortland region include:

  • Cornell University Center for Biotechnology
  • State University of New York at Binghamton Integrated Electronic Engineering Center
  • Syracuse University Computer Applications/Software Engineering Center

In addition, Cornell University has just been awarded a $19 million grant from the National Science Foundation over the next five years to establish the world's only center for nanobiotechnology, combining sophisticated devices even smaller than the molecular level, with biology and medicine. The applications resulting from the new Cornell Nanobiotechnology Center will have significant impact for fields ranging from agriculture to medicine to the environment. The new center is also being supported by funding by New York's state in support of its potential to spawn new jobs through a kind of technology that rivals the microelectronics industry that developed in the Silicon Valley. Cornell is also one of the nation's four supercomputing centers and one of the top research universities in the world.

Each of the three New York State Centers for Advanced Technology in the Cortland region offers assistance in several areas:

  • Commercialization of university developed technologies:

Companies seeking to license technologies and entrepreneurs seeking to establish start-up companies find that the CAT's help them to speed new technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace.

  • Troubleshooting and networking:

Companies call on the CAT's expertise for specialized technological assistance as well as networking with other technology-focused resources.

  • Collaborative research with New York industry:

Through the CAT's, companies invest in targeted research to improve their products, processes and knowledge of emerging industries.

  • Conduit to a highly skilled workforce:

Companies work with CAT's to create or coordinate education and training programs to update workers skills, keeping them current with the latest technology.
