Location and Market Access Cortland County is located at the geographic center of New York State, with access to all other regions in New York State, the neighboring Northeast corridor through Washington, DC, and Canada. The region is within a six-hour drive of 63 million US and Canadian customers, 21% of American manufacturers and a $227 billion dollar retail sales market. Cortland County has recently been designated as an Empire Zone through legislation passed in both the NYS Assembly and Senate, enabling businesses to take advantage of tax credits and special job training programs. Cortland is located in a corridor that economists call the "heartland" of future growth. The City of Cortland is surrounded by rolling hills, lush valleys and clear lakes, and is often called the "Crown City" because it sits on a plain formed by the convergence of seven valleys. The area is rich in natural resources, providing an assurance of continued industrial and agricultural growth, as well as quality of life.
