Education, Training and Workforce Development
Historically, with strong roots as an agricultural community, the Cortland County workforce is noted for its deep and abiding work ethic. This work ethic is augmented by an excellent skill base.
Cortland County is situated in a technology corridor between Syracuse University and Cornell University and has an available workforce of scientists, engineers, computer scientists and industrial researchers, as well as highly trained specialists. SUNY Cortland and Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) are also abundant sources of labor and can provide customized training programs.
The County has a talented labor force supported by a well balanced mixture of financial and human resources. SUNY College at Cortland offers opportunities for continuing education to support local business, as well as direct business opportunities to provide goods and services required to support the college. In addition to SUNY Cortland, Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) also provides excellent education support and training to the County. Cornell University, located in nearby Tompkins County, is one of the leading universities in the United States in research and scholarship and offers an ever widening array of opportunities for collaboration with businesses, industries, and government agencies. TC3 is also at the forefront of learning technologies, haven taken a lead in the national trend of distance learning. Of the 64 State University of New York campuses, TC3 ranks third in the number of online enrollments. Syracuse University and its Center for Advanced Technology, located in adjacent Onondaga County, is another education/industry partner.
Cortland County offers a diversity of quality educational opportunities from "Kindercare" to Master degree level programs. A high standard of elementary and secondary education is maintained throughout the county's various public and private school systems. In addition to these school systems, the County provides students an alternative vocational educational setting. The Cortland County region boasts some of the nation's finest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning. These academic institutions are very willing to assist Cortland County employers in many ways to meet their specific and unique needs.
Child Care
Cortland County offers ample and excellent child care/child development programs for the children of working parents on a full-time, part-time and drop-in basis. These programs include the YMCA, YWCA and Cortland Child Development Center, as well as the SUNY Cortland Child Care Center which is a national model for developmental early education.

The State University of New York College at Cortland -- located in the center of the City of Cortland -- enrolls approximately 5,400 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate students, and offers programs leading to bachelor's and master's degrees both in the arts and sciences, and in professional studies. Approximately 1,225 bachelor's degrees and 62 master's degrees are awarded annually, and SUNY Cortland has more than 45,000 alumni in each of the 50 states and 22 foreign countries. The College campus covers 191 acres located within walking distance of the City of Cortland's central business district.
The campus has a sophisticated library, with networked CD-ROM technology, on-line research, bound volumes and journals, and microtext, and open access allows users to enjoy borrowing privileges at all State University of New York libraries. The SUNY Cortland computer network comprises terminals, microcomputers, local area networks, and microcomputer labs across campus, supported by centralized mainframe computers, and various other local networks residing on an ethernet backbone. SUNY Cortland is tied into SUNYNET and NYSERNET, as well as other networks. Highly specialized facilities on campus include computer labs for statistical data analysis, high resolution graphics for mapping with color plotting capabilities, geographical information system (GIS), and math and science computer labs. In all, the campus has 33 public computing labs.
In addition, the campus has extensive special facilities such as a planetarium, greenhouse and natural science museum, as well as a recently renovated fine arts center with broadcast studios, and music studios. The Dowd Fine Arts Center contains a 476-seat theater that hosts theatrical performances, concerts and visiting musical organizations. In addition, the Dowd Fine Arts Center has a sculpture court and art gallery where monthly shows are featured. Another 793-seat theater is available for convocations, concerts and recitals.
Campus athletic facilities are considered to be among the best in New York State, with an Olympic-sized pool with a spectator gallery for 1,200, a gymnasium with seating for 3,600, ice hockey and recreational skating arena with seating for 2,400, a gymnastics arena with seating for 500, as well as an outdoor facility for football, lacrosse and outdoor track with seating for 4,000. There are 50 acres of athletic fields on campus, and a $10 million new athletic facility it planned.
SUNY Cortland also features an Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake which is surrounded by two and a half million acres of land in the Adirondack Forest Preserve. The camp itself is 446 acres situated on five miles of irregular shoreline on Long Point, a peninsula extending into Raquette Lake, and boasts bark-covered lodges designed and constructed in the late 1870s by William West Durant who was the father of the Adirondack School of Architecture. The College also owns a 170-acre nature preserve located just 15 minutes from Cortland that is used for field work in the natural sciences, as well as for snow-shoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter. Finally, SUNY Cortland's Brauer Memorial Field Research Station is the only major geological field facility in the State University of New York system.
SUNY Cortland has an active international program with affiliations with colleges and universities in Australia, Belize, the People's Republic of China, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland and Venezuela.

Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) is recognized as a state and national leader in distance learning, and is rapidly expanding its on-line course offerings with 30 courses and three degree programs that may be completed completely on-line. Courses are available through interactive video conferencing (synchronous distance learning) using high speed digital phone lines, live video and enhanced audio, and also on-line via personal computer through the Internet/World Wide Web (asynchronous distance learning). In addition, TC3 offers a myriad of on-line services for students through innovative software packages. The College offers associate degrees and certificates in 27 program areas, with some programs occupationally oriented and others designed to serve as the foundation for an eventual bachelor's degree. Extensive course offerings include accounting, business administration, communication and media arts, computer information systems, computer science, electrical technology, engineering science, environmental studies, graphic design and computer graphics, nursing, office management and administration, and a variety of other programs in applied sciences and the liberal arts.
TC3 offers a small college environment with an expert, highly dedicated faculty, and many initiatives at the College reflect the commitment to small class size, individual attention, diversity of the student body, and an array of instructional services from honors programs to academic support services. Graduates of TC3 have proven their abilities in some of the finest colleges and universities in the United States, and many graduates hold important positions in major corporations and businesses nationally and internationally. A wide-ranging activities program extends education beyond the classroom, providing another dimension to the learning process. An outstanding Tech Prep program and School-to-Work program also help build connections between businesses, schools and the College. Examples of community service programs include a Child Care Provider training workshop series and Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential program. Leadership Cortland is another partnership effort with TC3 and the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce.
TC3's Business Development and Training Center is at the forefront of workforce development, offering such programs as advanced supervisory management, materials management, on-line supervisory training, on-line computer training, and state licensing programs. The Business Development and Training Center is an active member of the community and dedicated to its economic growth and continued success. In addition to custom designed courses that can accomodate the needs of businesses ranging from a local, five-person software development company to a 3,000 employee Fortune 500 manufacturer, the Center can offer hands-on experience in such program areas as communication, team building, continuous improvement, computer applications, electrical technology and manufacturing technology.
